Bali, the Island of Spirits: Unusual Festivals and Dangerous Rituals
In this episode, we’re in Bali—one of the rare regions in Indonesia with a Hindu majority. Within predominantly Muslim Indonesia, Bali has a distinctive cultural structure where Hinduism shapes daily life. During our Bali trip, we arrived during Galungan and Kuningan, two of the island’s most important religious holidays. Celebrated twice a year by Balinese Hindus, these holidays symbolize the victory of good over evil. According to belief, during this period the spirits of ancestors descend to earth to visit their families. Throughout Galungan and Kuningan, strong and fascinating traditions are practiced across Bali. In this video, we observe the holiday preparations, rituals in a Hindu family’s home, and the Mekotek ceremony—one of Bali’s striking local traditions. The Ever-Growing Perito Moreno Glacier: Nature’s Giant Living Ice
Our South America trip continues in Argentine Patagonia. In this episode, we visit Perito Moreno Glacier, considered one of the world’s most extraordinary glaciers. Located in Patagonia, this glacier is part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field—one of the world’s third-largest freshwater reserve systems. On our Argentina route, we observe glaciers up close and examine landforms created by melting ice. While many glaciers are retreating due to global warming, Perito Moreno is one of the rare glaciers that has managed to remain stable and even advance in certain periods. During our Patagonia journey, we also visited Mount Fitz Roy near El Chaltén and Torres del Paine National Park on the Chilean side. Surprising Local Traditions on Bali, Indonesia
Bali is one of the rare regions in Indonesia where the Hindu population is concentrated within a Muslim-majority country. This makes the island culturally distinct from much of the rest of Indonesia. Between Glaciers and Volcanoes: Patagonia’s Harsh and Fascinating Nature
As we travel South America by van, we keep living the van life experience and continue documenting our journey in vlog format. Our first stop in Patagonia was the town of Chaitén, which was heavily affected by the major eruption of Chaitén Volcano in 2008. Hello, Van Life: Our First Camp in Chile’s Andes
We came to Santiago, Chile, for our South America tour and bought an empty Volkswagen Transporter to start our plan of traveling South America by van. As we began our van purchase and conversion process in Chile, the protests and state of emergency forced us to receive our mini camper later than planned and missing some parts. Even so, we started our South America van trip. We’ve now completed the first week of the van life we’d been planning for a long time. This period was about finishing technical gaps and getting used to living in the van. Even though van life was new to us, we quickly started adapting to a daily routine.
